boots with different leathers?

Greetings all,

I'm at the stage where I know the basics of how to handle both oil-tanned and polish boots. I even have dealt a bunch of times with boots that are both leather (the polish kind) and fabric. (Most of the time I don't do anything to the fabric, but when said boots come back from Burning Man caked with alkaline playa dust, I have a protocol to use on the fabric as well. I learned all of this from someone on this tribe!)

Now one of my regular play partners, and the person whose boots I do most frequently has a new pair of motorcycle boots. They are mostly oil-tanned leather, but they apparently also have some parts that, according to him, feel like velour. I am thinking that is either "nubuck" or suede.

Do any of you have any hints on:

* how do you keep the boot grease off the suede or nubuck?
* what is the best way to treat the suede or nubuck?

boots with both fabric and leather?

I need help ASAP. A friend has a pair of combat boots that are part leather and part fabric. He wore them at Burning Man and they need to be resuscitated. I know how to handle the leather, but haven't a clue how to handle the fabric. Can one use saddle soap on fabric? Also, are there hints on how to keep the shoe polish, etc. off the fabric?

Suggestions would be most gratefully received.

Hello all,

I am a new member to this tribe, and I think that it is a great idea. Heres my preblem: I bought a new pair of boots a couple ofweeks ago, and the souls smell sooooo bad! It's a fresh rubber smell, and I have tried airing them out, but beyond that I have no clue what to do next. I LOVE my boots, and it makes me sad that I can't wear them. How do I get rid of the chemical aroma?

boots at Folsom

Well, I was at Folsom Fringe classes all day Saturday, ogling boots all over the place. At one point a pair of Dehners walked by. Even though I had already noticed them, when my friend that I was talking to pointed them out to me, I became completely flustered and dropped my water glass on the floor.

Then on Sunday, at the fair, I got to witness part of a classic boot licking scene on the street! I watched, mesmerized, for quite a while.

I also tried on some 8" Frye engineer boots at Stompers, but they didn't seem to work well for me. By the time I got to a size that was big enough that I could get them on, they seemed way too loose once they *were* on. Oh well.

Great Idea for those with Zippered Boots

New guy here, haven't even filled out my profile yet, but I came up with a great idea, and finally found a place to share it with others who might appreciate it as well.

What I do with boots is get a good pair of black leather steel toed boots, and wear them every day, no matter what I'm doing, until there's nothing left, then do it again. That might not make me enough of a boot slut for some, but I don't really give a fuck. My last pair was by UK Underground and lasted 3.5 years. Current boots are by Demonia and are still going strong at 1.5 yrs. My current boots have zippers, which is why I bought them, because I don't want to have to lace my boots up every day. When I go to work, where I have to wear a tie, I pull my dress pants down over my boots and they just look like black leather shoes; no one can see they go up to my knees. When I'm not at work my boots are outside my pants, where they look better. Problem was that they would always be a little too tight outside my leather pants, or too loose inside work pants, and I don't like having to reset the tension on the laces. So what I did was go to eBay and buy 1/8" bungee cord, which is just a little bit thinner than the 5mm paracord I had been using for laces. Since the bungee cord stretches, my boots are now always at the right tension!

Have I finally found the place where someone else will be as excited about this as I am?

SF cobbler???

I have a pair of twenty-eye Undergound boot that are in need of a major overhaul (re-sole, some leather patching, some eyelet replacement) as well as a modification or two.

Thus, I'm looking for a skilled yet affordable cobbler in SF or the Bay Area. I've seen a lot of cobblers around, but rather than just drop my boots off at some random shop I'd really like to take them to someone who won't just rush through and do a slapdash job. I love these boots and want them to last as long as possible.

Any recommedations?

From time to time I notice that certain styles are called "boots" when to me they are booties or even just shoes. I guess that technically anything that comes above the ankle is a boot but . . . How do you define boots? Do you just go by what the retailer decides they are?
